Most have no independent testing on entire system. Some have independent testing using non-standard, invalid tests. Some have ratings on filters only (outside of the system) and when tested in-system typically results in a 50% or more decrease in system efficiency. If the label says something to the effect of "True HEPA filter removes 99.97% of airborne particles" - beware - this is likely a theoretical rating of the filter only, not the actual in-system filtration efficiency - not the actual clean air output rating. Ask for specific test results of actual air filtration efficiency. Some are rated according to AHAM CADR - but AHAM CADR is a substandard test. Some are rated using ASHRAE guidelines, which are guidelines intended for the protection of HVAC equipment. The ASHRAE guidelines are a standard not intended as a guide for human health concerns and should not be considered when deciding on an air purifier to improve healthly living environments. |

Most only give theoretical ratings or ratings of filters outside the system (you'll often see "99.97% filter efficiency", but this is not a total system efficiency rating, it's only a theoretical rating of the filter outside the system).
